Artist’s Context – Poem: You’re immune
I wrote this piece whilst posted to 3 Brigade in 2016.
It’s about falling into, and remaining in, a major depressive episode.
You’re immune
It’s poisoned honey that spills from my tongue
I have the devil in my eye and he’s going to find someone
A lot of lost lambs all around
It’s a pity that none of them are going to be found
Laughing lasts longer when you believe that you’re immune
I agree and reassure you as I feed you by the spoon
Lure you a little lamer, slip into my embrace
I tiptoe at first and caress your face
You know I’m right—stay home tonight—nobody wants you there
Neglect your health—remain in stealth—I’ve caught you unaware
Stripped of your defences you draw you terminal breath
It isn’t a pretty picture, you’ve lived for death.
